James Henry Dowd was primarily a draughtsman, etcher, and painter who specialised in illustrating children. Born 1884, died 1956. He designed posters for the Underground Group from 1924-1926. London Zoo features in more Underground posters than any other subject; at least 2 per year were produced throughout the 1920's. The Zoological Society of London was founded in 1826 by Sir Stamford Raffles. Since then, their mission has been to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats in the wild as well as at ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.
