1959 - Artist unknown. London Transport supplied mobile as well as static canteens for all its staff. In the 1930s these took various forms, including converted NS-type buses and refreshment tricycles. Before World War II 113 canteens served 42,000 meals daily. By 1949, 180 canteens were serving more than the equivalent of 50 million meals a year, spread over the London Transport area of 2000 square miles. At its peak in 1950, London Transport had 100,000 staff and was the biggest employer in London.
