DaTerra is a truly beautiful collection of tableware, hand-painted and handmade by artisans in Portugal. Mike & Gabrielle discovered these handmade ceramics whilst on their travels around the factories in Portugal. The artists in this factory have used their expertise to bring new life to old techniques, the result is modern and unique. This summer we are pleased to launch four new designs – Blue Lagoon, Uyuni, Papua and Mariana Trench. The design of each new range is inspired by some of Mother Nature’s spectacles, from the ocean to the jungle. No two pieces in the collection are ever the same giving DaTerra a unique charm which is further enhanced by their organic forms. DaTerra looks at it’s best when the patterns are mixed together.

It’s endlessly fascinating to see how things are made when we visit factories. Tools are used by highly skilled craftsmen to prepare the mother mould. Liquid clay (slip cast) is poured into production moulds and then left for approximately 20 minutes – depending on the wall thickness required. The remaining liquid is emptied leaving a wet cast. Once the cast is dried any sharp edges are fettled off and then the cast is biscuit fired. Coloured glaze is hand applied to the biscuit and then fired again.
