As we are celebrate 30 years in the business, we’d like to tell you the story of how we came to be:
As you may be aware, BlissHome has not always been the stylish company it is now; once famed for Maggie Thatcher loo roll holders, we gained some notoriety (and laughs) for controversial products that made headline news.
What is now BlissHome began in 1978 from a borrowed garden shed in Birmingham. Known as Woody Enterprises, Mike Bliss and his partner Andy Plant hand-cut all the original products; including Wooden Ties, the Mouth Clock, B.R.E.A.D.Board and Cupboard Man suitcase. Made from real bread (special 2ft long loaves had to be made!), soaked in resin, the Toast Clocks were a real hit.
Mike and Andy travelled around the country in a Morris Minor taking orders from customers. To their delight, their first order was taken in March 1978 from a suitcase display…how things have changed!
By 1984 Woody Enterprises had moved to a small workshop behind St. Mary’s church graveyard in Moseley, Birmingham. Here the celebrated Daffodil and Tulip lights came into creation and were an instant success around the world, perhaps for their fun and cheerful nature.
After Andy moved on to make one-off timepieces, Woody Enterprises evolved into Bliss and left Mike to lead the way. During the next few years, some iconic products were born; namely the Roman Clocks, which helped Bliss to make the transformation from handmade production line in a garden shed to successful, family business. Mike’s then girlfriend (now wife) Gabrielle joined the team and helped the company step up a gear with her stylish eye. The beautiful Berlinetta television was featured on Jonathan Ross’ TV show “The Last Resort” giving the product a huge boost.
